The main gemstone clarity scale is the diamond clarity scale. It is based on white diamonds rather than colored gemstones. The term ‘Clarity’ is used to describe the absence or presence of flaws inside or on the surface of a gemstone. It is rare to find a perfect stone with perfect clarity and most flaws in jewelry grade diamonds cannot be seen without looking at the gemstones through a jeweler’s magnifying loupe. Don’t be over-concerned if the clarity grade of the diamond you choose is not near the top of the scale. Diamonds with a ‘ less than perfect’ level of clarity and therefore less expensive are often, beautiful and a perfectly excellent purchase. A perfect diamond at the ‘top of the scale’ will carry a much more expensive and sometimes unrealistic and unnecessary price tag.
