Contemporary Wedding Vows

Traditional Wedding Vows

A couple may privately whisper love to each other in intimate privacy, but in Contemporary wedding vows these vows are made public.  The couples love and commitment is confirmed before witnesses; this is a serious, solemn, lifelong commitment.

I Plight Thee My Troth

The groom often says the  words, ” I plight thee my troth”  as a promise.  In the contemporary wedding vows of a monogamous marriage ( between one husband and one wife) these vows are the promises by both lovers to be exclusively faithful to each other for life.

Yes, this is, and indeed should be, a serious, solemn, lifelong commitment.   These marriage vows may be classic wedding vows or non traditional wedding vows.  Also there may be non religious or religious wedding vows pledged by couples with faith in God.

The Christian Wedding Vows

Some contemporary Christian wedding vows, follow the biblical teaching of wives obeying as well as loving their husbands.  In these ceremonies the  bride’s pledge takes the form of love honor obey wedding vows.   Not all Christian brides however, in the 21st Century promise obedience to their husbands.    The bible passages that teach wives obedience to their husbands is found in the Holy Bible, the book of  Ephesians chapter 5, verse 24:

Love, Honour and Obey

Many christian wives promise to love honour and obey

She holds his hands trustingly in their new life together

Eph 5: 22 to 26 You wives will submit to your husbands as you do to the Lord.   For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of his body, the church; he gave his life to be her Savior.  As the church submits to Christ, so you wives must submit to your husbands in everything.  And you husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. (New Living Bible Translation).

An Obedience of Trust and Love

However, many brides, even in the Christian church actually shy away from these verses that promise obedience when sharing contemporary wedding vows .  But many Christian point out that the “obedience” spoken of here is not an obedience where the husband has draconian mastery over his wife.  She is honored and deeply loved; her husband will listen to her opinions attentively and they will plan together as he protects her.  Furthermore, that which the Christian husband is asked in these verses is much more than the wife is asked; the husband must love his wife, be her protector and lay his life down for her in serving her, just as in the Christian faith Jesus gave himself for his followers!  Normally in Christian homes that follow this bible pattern the matter of obedience is more of the ‘yielding of persuasion’ that only transpires in extreme cases of clashes of opinion. It is a natural  obedience of trust and love.

The Bride – A Picture of  The Church of Jesus Christ

In the Christian faith, every bride is a picture of The Bride of Jesus Christ and His beloved Church.  This beautiful “Bride” that he loves ( according to the bible) will dwell eternally with Him in the ” New Jerusalem”.   Perhaps you would like to read my articles on ” heaven”.

The Jewish Wedding

A Jewish wedding ceremony

In a traditional Jewish ceremony, there is no actual exchange of  the Jewish wedding vows; the covenant is said to be implicit in the ritual. The Jewish wedding ceremony structure varies within Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist synagogues, and also among individual rabbis. The Jewish contemporary wedding vows  are customarily sealed when the groom places a ring on the bride’s finger and says (in English transliteration), “Haray at mekudeshet lee beh-taba’at zo keh-dat Moshe veh-Yisrael,” which translates to, “Behold, you are consecrated to me with this ring according to the laws of Moses and Israel.”

Many Jewish couples today do want to exchange spoken vows; they are now included in many Reform and Conservative ceremonies.
